
You probably will not be able to successfully select the new object due to the underlying original and may have to use the Hide function in the Object menu to hide the parent object so that you can work with the new object. To create a new object that abuts the original object do an Extract and immediately LMB without moving the mouse to lock it in place. Note: The faces do not have to be contiguous.
